神戸の旧居留地、1800年代の後半に外国の治外法権が及んでいた地域、とウィキペディアにはある。
もっと砕いて言うと、その頃の外国人たちが神戸に対してビジネス拠点としてのまとまった土地を要求し、あてがわれたのが今はフラワーロードになっている旧生田川の氾濫が度々おこり、地盤も悪いこの場所だったらしい。
本当は現在川崎重工の造船所があり、貿易に有利な海に面した土地を要求していたという話もある。
この界隈は古い重厚な石造りの建物がリノベーションされて有効に利用されて居たり、新しく建つ建物も往々にして古い建物の意匠を継承したり、高さや素材、セットバックに関しても全体として調和がとれるように配慮されている建物も多く、ただ歩いているだけで本当に楽しい。
大丸神戸店がその居留地の北西の端にある。
大丸は周辺に点在する古い建物を次々に買収、保存をし、店舗にリノベートして行っている。
そうすることで全く新たに作り出すことが不可能に近い界隈の街としての品格を保ち、その品格が人を呼び、大丸としても全体の売り上げが上がる。
そしてまた新たに建物を買収、というサイクルで。
よく歴史的な建物の保存を求める活動をニュースで見るけれども、保存するからには誰かがお金をかけなければいけないわけで、やはりそこにビジネスとして利益が絡んでこないと持続可能な保存に結びつかないのである。
ビジネスというとなりふり構わず利益を上げることが至上命題に感じるけれども、こんなサイクルを生み出すビジネスが人間にとっての本来の本分なのではないのかな、と居留地を歩くたびに教えてもらっている気がする。

There is a district in Kobe where foreigners ran there business with extraterritoriality in late 19th.
Foreigners requested large amount of land for their business to the authority, the land they could get was the land with bad ground.
They originally requested the plot where currently Kawasaki heavy industry is.
There are lot of renovated stone built buildings and make us so fun just with taking a walk around here.
Daimaru kobe, famous department store is locating at the north-west edge of the district.
Daimaru bought many of those old stone built buildings and renovated them in to retail stores.
The dignity of the district has been kept by such activity and the dignity call people in to the district, buy things and bring profit to Daimaru.
Then Daimaru will buy more those old buildings.
We see some people are demanding the authority or the owner to preserve the old historical building in the news.
But it will cost to preserve those buildings and somebody has to be responsible for it.
The business chance has to be there to have the sustainable preservation.
The term “business chance” sounds making profit at any cost is an absolute must, but to create the business flow like Daimaru does is the real and fundamental duty of the people I assume.
This district telling me so every time we take a walk in it.
